OKHotshot’s investigation revealed that the attack was carried out by Boris Vagner (community manager at Yuga Labs), hacking into Discord.
Yuga Labs is the creator of two popular non-fungible tokens (NFTs) with a pe theme — Bored Ape Yacht Club (BAYC), and OtherSide. However, investors lost over 145 Ether ( ETH) or almost $260,000 as of this writing.
OKHotshot is a crypto detective who alerted crypto investors to the compromise of two official Discord group linked to BAYC or OtherSide NFTs.
OKHotshot’s investigation revealed that the attack was carried out by Boris Vagner (community manager at Yuga Labs), hacking into Discord.
After they gained unrestricted access, the scammers shared phishing links from Vagner’s Discord account to the official BAYC and Mutant Ape Yacht Club groups.
Many Discord users fell for the phishing messages promising limited-quantity giveaways for NFT holders, despite being aware of the scam. The screenshot above shows this.
OKHotshot concluded the investigation and revealed the wallets where the NFTs were held. This makes it the second attack on BAYC in the space of just a few weeks.
Cointelegraph has yet to hear back from Yuga Labs.
A Proof Collective member lost 29 highly-valued Ethereum-based Moonbirds NFTs valued at $1.5 million in an ongoing scam on May 25.
Although the extent of the damage caused by this hack is not known, NFT owners should be cautious when dealing with third party platforms. They should also double-check any information shared by others, even though they may appear trustworthy.
