Imran Khan is a former Prime Minister of Pakistan and the current Chairman of one of the biggest political parties in Pakistan. He confirmed that his Instagram account had been compromised by hackers and used it to promote a scam involving cryptocurrency giveaways.

Former Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan is currently the chairman of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf, one of the largest political parties within the country. He confirmed Monday that his Instagram account had been hacked.

Dawn publication was informed by him that his account had been quickly recovered thanks to Meta, the owner of Facebook and Instagram. He said that he monitors the account with 7.4 million followers and noted that hackers had posted a link to cryptocurrency and a screenshot from a tweet by Tesla CEO Elon Musk.

A link to cryptocurrency posted by the politician leads to a site offering free crypto. It features Musk and Spacex. Scammers claim they are giving away bitcoin ( BTC), Ethereum ( EETH), Dogecoin(DOGE) and Litecoin ( LTC).

Popular social media platforms like Youtube and Twitter are full of cryptocurrency giveaways. Many of these scams feature celebrities such as Musk and Spacex, Apple and Spacex, Tim Cook, Steve Wozniak and Warren Buffett. Sometimes they feature CEOs of crypto companies like Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong.

Wozniak sued Youtube & Google in July 2020 for promoting the bitcoin giveaway scams with his name and image. He lost the lawsuit. The judge ruled that YouTube and Google LLC, its parent company, were protected by federal law which shields internet platforms’ responsibility for user content.

In July, The British Army’s official Youtube account and Twitter account were compromised by hackers who used them to promote their crypto giveaways.

To combat scams, many crypto companies, including Binance and Circle launched a platform for reporting on crypto scams in May. This allows anyone in the crypto economy “to warn others about scams and hacks or any other fraudulent activity they come across”
