A hacker took the funds hours after Bill Murray’s NFT Auction, which raised $185,000 for charity on Thursday. The original runner up bidder at the auction has offered to replace the stolen money.

At around 7:00 PM, the hacker began to steal Murray’s personal bank account. According to onchain data from Etherscan, and details from Murray’s staff, ET was Thursday. Unknown individual attempted to steal non-fungible tokens belonging to the actor’s personal collection.

This hack shows how crypto thieves and hackers can even be celebrities. Bill Murray was able to protect himself from the worst by having a wallet security team.

Murray’s security team saves NFT collection

Murray’s wallet security team at NFT consultancy Project Venkman helped to protect the actor’s NFTs. They moved his expensive JPEGs, including a Damien Hirst NFT and two CryptoPunks to a pair safehouse wallets.

Another attempt was made to steal 800 NFTs from Bill Murray collection, which were stored in the wallet. However, Project Venkman stated that it stopped that attempt by moving the NFTs to a safer place. They claimed that they used a script to move NFTs to safety.

They were less successful in protecting the funds. Representatives confirmed that the hacker took 119.2 ETH Murray had just raised for a charity auction. According to Murray’s team, the attacker sent the stolen funds directly to a wallet address linked to the crypto exchange Binance. The perpetrator is still unknown.

A representative from the marketplace said that even though the original Ethereum is gone, a Coinbase user mishap72 has sent 120 Ethereum (around \$187,000.500) to Chive Charities to make up for what was lost.

Murray’s team claims it has filed a police report, and is working with Chainalysis crypto analytics firm to bring the attacker to justice. CoinDesk did not receive a response from Chainalysis immediately.
