Sony, the global electronics company, announced that it will be more focused on metaverse experiences as part its entertainment strategy. The Playstation brand is owned by Sony. It revealed that previous investments in Epic (the maker of Fortnite) and Bungie (another gaming studio) are part of this new push.

Sony to Take Metaverse seriously
Entertainment and gaming brands are trying to incorporate metaverse experiences in order to attract more users into their ecosystems. Sony, a major company in entertainment and gaming has expressed its desire to offer more metaverse-inspired experiences for customers.

This week’s annual strategy meeting was attended by Kenichiro Yoshida , Chief Executive of Sony.

The metaverse is a social space that also serves as a live network space, where music, movies, and anime all intersect.

Sony has previously invested in other companies, including Epic Games, which is the maker of Fortnite and Bungee. These are both part of the new focus. The company presented numbers that more than half of the revenue for the past fiscal year came out of Sony’s entertainment division. This includes movies, gaming, and music-related services.

Playstation vs. other Metaverse Players
Sony plans to make its Playstation brands a leader in the metaverse industry. Sony Playstation is one of the most popular platforms for installing games, and it could be used to push the metaverse. stated that it intends to “use the unique strengths of its diverse businesses and expertise with game technology… creating new entertainment experience in the area surrounding the metaverse.”

The company is currently playing catch up with Meta, which produces hardware to offer metaverse immersion experiences for its customers. Meta is the exclusive owner of Oculus VR headsets, and offers its flagship metaverse app, Horizon Worlds to those who own these products.

Microsoft is yet another company that wants to be a metaverse leader. acquired Activision at almost $69 billion dollars to help them get there. launched Mesh as a corporate metaverse to support its Teams meeting suite.

Sony already demonstrated its VR2 headsets that can be used in conjunction with the PS5 consoles. Although the headset was expected to be released this year, it may be delayed until 2023 because of supply chain issues.
